A shed is only as good as what it is standing on. Almost every long-term problem people have with one, doors that stop latching, a floor that develops a soft spot, a persistent musty smell, traces back to the base rather than the building.
The good news is that site preparation is straightforward. It just has to happen before delivery day, not after.
Why the ground matters more than it looks
Two things are going on beneath a shed.
The first is drainage. Water that sits under a floor has nowhere to go but up, into the joists. A base that lets water pass through and away keeps the underside dry.
The second is movement. Soil moves with frost and moisture. If it moves unevenly, the building racks slightly. Because a shed is a rigid box, small amounts of racking show up immediately in the parts with fine tolerances, which is why doors are the early warning system.
A good base addresses both at once: it drains, and it spreads load evenly so that seasonal movement happens uniformly rather than in one corner.
Gravel: the default, and usually the right one
For most residential sheds, a crushed stone pad is the best combination of drainage, cost and simplicity.
The usual build-up is straightforward. Excavate the topsoil and any organic material, since that is the layer that holds water and settles. Frame the area with pressure-treated timber or a similar edge to stop the stone migrating. Fill with crushed stone, compacting as you go, and level it carefully.
Two details make the difference between a pad that works and one that does not:
- Use angular crushed stone, not rounded pea gravel. Angular pieces lock together and stay put. Round ones behave like ball bearings and spread.
- Make the pad larger than the shed. Extending roughly a foot beyond each side gives the drip line from the roof somewhere to land other than the soil directly against the building.
Level matters more than perfectly level. A pad that is flat and firm across its whole area beats one that is laser-level in the middle and soft at an edge.
When concrete makes sense
A concrete slab is the right answer in specific cases rather than as a default.
It is worth it if the shed will hold serious weight, if you want a garage-style floor to roll equipment onto, if it is becoming a workshop with machinery, or if you want a finished floor surface with no separate wood floor system.
A slab is more work and more cost, needs proper thickness and reinforcement, and requires drainage thought of its own so that water runs away from rather than toward the building. It is also permanent in a way gravel is not, which matters if the shed might move one day.
For a standard storage shed, concrete is usually more than the job requires.
New Jersey ground conditions
Soil across Monmouth County is not uniform, and the difference shows up in site prep.
Closer to the shore, and through much of the Bayshore, the ground tends to be sandier. Sandy soil drains well, which helps, but it also shifts more readily and compacts unevenly, so edge restraint and thorough compaction earn their keep. Properties in Sea Bright or Manasquan sit on very different material from those a few miles inland.
Further inland, around Freehold Township or Millstone Township, heavier soils hold water for longer after rain. There, the depth of stone and the removal of organic topsoil matter more, because the ground underneath will not drain for you.
Frost is a factor everywhere in the state. A gravel pad accommodates frost movement by letting the whole base rise and settle together. That is precisely why uniformity across the pad matters more than any single measurement.
Where to put it, practically
Site selection and site preparation are the same decision made twice.
Avoid the low point of the yard, however convenient it looks. Water finds it. Avoid building tight against a fence or treeline, where air does not circulate and leaf litter piles against the siding. Keep clear of downspout discharge and anywhere runoff naturally crosses.
Think about access before you commit. A shed has to get to the spot, either driven in on a trailer or lifted over the house. Gate widths, overhead wires, tree limbs and soft lawn after heavy rain all matter, and they are easier to solve in advance than on the morning.
Sun exposure is worth a thought too. A shed in permanent shade under trees stays damp and grows algae on the north face. One in full sun gets hot inside, which matters if you are storing anything sensitive.
Getting it right the first time
Site prep is the one part of a shed project that is far cheaper to do properly than to correct. Once the building is in place, fixing the base underneath it means moving the shed.
Get the pad in, let it settle, check it is flat, and then take delivery. Everything after that is easier.
